Avoid problems caused by too hard carbon steel
Hardness Testing is a quick reliable way of measuring the hardness of carbon steel. This is important, because if a carbon steel alloy is too hard, it will typically also be quite brittle and more prone to rupture. And this will obviously lead to higher repair costs as well as unsafe situations.
NDO Nederland conducts an indicative hardness test on-site, allowing construction to be not or very little delayed. An advisory report is also always included, allowing you to avoid similar future problems.
- Always quick results due to on-site testing
- Preventing high costs and unsafe situations
- Guaranteed proper carbon steel hardness

Need Hardness Testing?
QUICK CARBON STEEL TEST RESULTSAdvantages of Hardness Testing
The main advantage of Hardness Testing by NDO Nederland is a 100% guarantee that the used carbon steel isn’t too hard, thus reducing the risk of brittle fractures or ruptures. This also prevents high repair costs and unsafe situations.
Thanks to our advanced testing equipment is it also possible to conduct indicative measurements on-site. Only after the results of this measurement exceed certain limits, we will conduct a test on a stationary testing unit. This portable testing offers much quicker and easier results, than when only stationary measurements are the only option. Construction delay can thus be avoided in many cases.
- Guaranteed proper carbon steel hardness
- Preventing high costs and unsafe situations
- Testing on-site also possible
How does Hardness Testing work?
We often see too high levels of hardness occur when pre-heating procedures during welding are not followed properly. Do you want to make sure that the carbon steel meets all requirements? Have a hardness test conducted. This type of non-destructive testing prevents possible repair costs and ensures a safe end product.
Maximum limit levels of carbon steel hardness are stipulated in various standards, legislations and specifications. A hardness test will allow you to determine in time whether the used material meets the requirements. NDO Netherlands uses the Equotip hardness test in which units such as Vickers, Rockwell and Brinell are often used.

Frequently asked questions regarding Hardness Testing
-
WHAT TYPES OF HARDNESS TESTING DOES NDO NEDERLAND USE?
We gebruiken de Equotip-methode, die de hardheid meet op basis van een elektronische analyse van impact- en terugveersnelheid. De eenheden Vickers, Rockwell en Brinell passen we veel toe.
-
IS HARDNESS TESTING POSSIBLE ON COATED STEEL?
No, in that case we would be testing the hardness of the coating. It is therefore important to conduct Hardness Testing early, before any coating is applied.
-
CAN HARDNESS TESTING BE CONDUCTED IN THE RAIN AS WELL?
Yes it can, we have found a suitable solution for this.
-
HOW LONG DOES HARDNESS TESTING TAKE?
In most cases we can offer a hardness indication within 2 hours, thus reducing delay to a minimum.
-
DOES HARDNESS TESTING LEAVE ANY TRACES?
Some methods damage the measuring surface, others do not. Unfortunately each method does not suit all situations, as a result of which slight damage cannot always be avoided. We always consider your wishes in our advice.
