ISO 9001:2015 & VCA* certified

A quick method for determining the elemental composition of your material

OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy) Testing determines the exact elemental composition of the metal you are working with. This can be necessary, for instance to ensure a client that you have applied the proper stainless steel or welding wire.

OES Testing prevents high repair or replacement costs afterwards. An advisory report is also always included, allowing you to avoid similar future problems.

  • Option of Carbon Equivalent calculation
  • Always conducted on-site
  • Clear advisory report included
  • Quantitative analysis of all kinds of alloys
  • Prevents incorrect working procedures

Advantages of OES Analysis

OES Testing holds a number of advantages over other methods which can determine the chemical composition of materials.

The main advantage of OES Testing is the option of calculating the Carbon Equivalent, which other methods lack. In addition, OES Testing can also be used to analyse other alloys consisting for instance aluminium, nickel, chrome or copper, thus making it a widely applicable tool, but in some cases we prefer a XRF analysis . Due to our mobile measuring equipment, on-site testing is possible even at difficultly accessible locations. Stopping by our workshop is obviously also not a problem.

In order to conduct an accurate test, we always pre-treat the surface in question. Testing itself is almost completely non-destructive and never compromises the integrity of the structure: by using a sparking process (applying an electrical charge to the sample) just a very small amount of sample material is vaporised.

OES Testing identifies which materials you need to work with, thus preventing incorrect working procedures and subsequent high repair costs. It also allows you to determine whether extra precautionary measures are necessary. OES Analysis is also used when it is unclear whether statutory material is or is not to be used.

  • On-site testing
  • Prevents incorrect working procedures
  • Leaves virtually no traces

How does OES Analysis work?

With a mobile spectrograph we trigger atoms within a metallic sample so that they produce characteristic light, or optical emission, which is subsequently measured by the spectrograph. By analysing its frequency and intensity, the chemical composition of the sample can be determined. We can thus identify a whole range of elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, nickel, copper, tungsten and iron.
